alright so i don't really know how to do these. i like music and talking about music. so i'm just gonna say whatever i want and you're GONNA read it ok...

this first one is gonna be about

Lily of the Valley by 22° Halo!

(listen along here!)

lilyofthevalley

my favorites:

♫ Virtual You ♫

this song is about remembering how someone used to be before they were sick. but my initial interpretation was that it was about online/long distance friendships. "a virtual you / the one i'm laughing with / stares back at me..." see what i mean...? i really like the lyric "an early start to a floundering wednesday" too.

♫ Orioles at Dusk ♫

this is about falling in love with someone while working at a baseball game, i think. (i just found that out... should i be researching more as a prospective music reviewer? i dont know!) it makes me think of feeling hopeful and seeing leaves and friends and the sky... being so excited to get to know someone (like, having the privilege to know someone) and i love the outro i think it's just so beautiful. feels like the essence of new beginnings and springtime.

♫ Ivy ♫

"saw a beetle on the moss / slowly drying up / with it's legs curled in..." this feels a little like walking home after a good day when its getting dark outside, and you know that it might not always be good, and that thought is sort of haunting your good feeling. there is something very sweet about the second singer's voice in this song, the way the effect he's used on his voice for the whole album sounds a bit different on her. i like the twinkling guitar and panning synth a lot too.

♫ Cobwebs ♫

"i'm reminded when the surgeon took you in / your mother grabbed at the pain in her chest / you noticed it / held the back of her hand" it is very scary to see someone you love in pain. and you think of how great they are, and how they're kind and thoughtful even when they're in pain. this song is, as whoever wrote the genius lyrics description wrote, "the crux of the grief/hopelessness of this record" and btw, she does survive in the end! (in the final song of the album: "be the lily of the valley / you can make it the year / you can make it decades") i am so drawn in by the chorus of this song, the drones that slowly come in and abruptly end, and the bass singing along with his voice in the verses.

what this album reminds me of:

→ washing my hair in my best friends shower

→ helping my mom when she isn't doing well

→ walking home from work in the middle of spring

→ writing my first music review on my personal website...

overall thoughts:

there shall be NO points based system on Handsnanitizer Website Music Reviews because they STRESS me OUT! i like this album a lot. it is one of my favorites i listened to last year, and i think i'll probably come back to it when i want to feel spring-ful or hopefulsad. extra points (no points) for the album cover, which is stunning. i need to print it out and put it on my wall. ♣
